Depression can take many forms. Some people feel intense sadness and loneliness while others may feel numb or empty. Depression treatment can help clients overcome these struggles and improve overall mood and sense of wellbeing. Sessions will focus on identifying underlying factors contributing to depression and coping strategies for lasting change.
If you've had anxiety for a long time or find yourself feeling anxious more recently, you know how emotionally and physically exhausting it is. Whether you're struggling with generalized anxiety, panic attacks, social anxiety, or specific fears/phobias, there are several highly effective treatment interventions to find relief and enhance a sense of calm, control and confidence.
If you're dealing with PTSD, complex trauma, dissociation, or other trauma related concerns, we will collaborate to identify the best way to work through the impact past or recent trauma is having on your present life. Trauma work and healing from the past is a very unique process for each person. Sessions will be specifically designed to meet your needs and personal preferences.
Relationship concerns and struggles with effective communication are some of the most common reasons individuals and couples seek out therapy. Relationship concerns can include problems with family members, a spouse or partner, friends, coworkers/bosses, or other people in general. We all face relationship concerns at some point in our lives. Therapy is a wonderful way to find effective strategies to process difficult emotions, communicate feelings, needs, and boundaries skillfully, and connect more authentically and deeply with important people in our lives.
Life transition sessions can help tremendously in navigating major life changes such as retirement, change in career path, divorce and relationship endings, or adjusting to college life or 'the real world' after college. The goal of these sessions is to find clarity and confidence as you process the emotional impact of the transition while adjusting to and embracing a new chapter.
Many people seek out therapy to help enhance confidence and work through body image and/or eating disorder concerns. There are multiple societal, familial, and personal factors that can lead to a negative or distorted self-image. Body image, confidence, and eating disorder treatment sessions will be customized to help work through these inner battles and heal the relationship with self and body.
We often think of our physical health and emotional health as two separate dimensions of wellness; however, our mind and body are inextricably linked. Research consistently demonstrates that unaddressed emotional suffering leads to physical disease and vice versa. These sessions will approach wellness from a holistic, mindfulness-based, and neuroscientific/biological lens. This approach will help clients cultivate emotional and physical wellness, enhance mind-body connection, reduce stress, improve sleep and work towards specific health goals.
Therapy for grief and loss can be hugely beneficial as clients move through the pain of losing a loved one or facing another significant loss. Our life purpose or meaning and even our sense of identity can change following a significant death or loss. Grief and loss sessions will provide a compassionate space to process complex emotions involved in grieving. Sessions will also support clients in finding ways to draw strength from oneself and one's support system, and experience new sources of joy or meaning without bypassing grief.
Despite how common struggles with unhelpful coping habits are, there remains a strong stigma in society which often prevents people from seeking out professional support. Coping with alcohol or other mood-altering substances is effective as a 'quick fix' but often leads to further problems. The same goes for other unhelpful ways of coping (e.g. gambling, self-harm, toxic relationships, porn, shopping, social media addiction, etc.). Treatment sessions for unhelpful ways of coping will incorporate emotion-focused and behavioral strategies to kick whatever habit is disrupting your life and find more helpful ways of coping while enhancing overall life satisfaction.
ADHD often goes unrecognized or is mislabeled as negative personality traits such as laziness, disorganization, poor time management, procrastination, or lack of control over impulses or emotions. For people who feel they have always struggled across different settings (e.g. school, work, home life), it is common to have internalized negative feedback and think, "there's something wrong with me...I just can't seem to function like other people." If this resonates with you and you believe you may be dealing with ADHD related concerns, we will collaborate to evaluate these concerns and identify helpful strategies to work with your brain instead of against it. Sessions will focus on how to cope effectively with ADHD through mindfulness, emotion regulation, cognitive behavioral, and practical solution focused strategies.
Obsessive compulsive disorder can look very different for different people and is often misunderstood and misrepresented. Many people mistakenly believe OCD refers to a "type A" personality or preference for order or cleanliness. Because of these misunderstandings, it can be very stressful or confusing to deal with OCD. Typically, OCD is characterized by unwanted and often distressing intrusive or obsessive thoughts, as well as behavioral or mental compulsions to help ease the thoughts. Compulsions tend to perpetuate and increase obsessive thoughts and distress over time. OCD treatment sessions will focus on understanding the nature of obsessive thoughts and related compulsions and identifying specific emotion-focused, DBT, and/or cognitive behavioral strategies to decrease OCD symptoms and distress.
If you have been diagnosed with or think you may be dealing with a mood disorder such as bipolar, therapy can be an extremely important aspect of treatment in conjunction with psychotropic medication. Treatment approach will be holistic and collaborative, ensuring that care is coordinated between the client and their therapy and psychiatry providers. Medication alone is often insufficient in addressing the ups and downs of mood disorders. In these sessions, we will focus on catching warning signs as early as possible and implementing effective strategies to prevent or mitigate manic and depressive episodes.
The list of treatment types included on this page is by no means exhaustive. If you are dealing with a current mental health concern or other life struggle that is not mentioned above, such as borderline personality disorder, caretaker burnout, chronic stress, chronic illness, neurological disorders, or any other concern, please do not hesitate to reach out and schedule a phone consultation. It is also important to note that many people are dealing with multiple mental health or other life concerns simultaneously. Sessions will be tailored to meet your specific needs and may integrate several of the above listed treatment types.
